Dear Parents,
To encourage reading, it is important to visit the library
often and to know your child’s reading level. For summer
reading, you want to choose books that are at your child’s
independent level. If you open the book to any page and the
child misses three to five words on the page, it is not an
independent reading level. It is also important to match books
to the child’s interests. Set a specific time every
day to read. Make the area quiet and comfortable. Create a
routine. It is important for parents to encourage reading,
listen to their child read, read with their child, and make
it an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Let your child see
you enjoying a book, as well. When you are checking out books
for your child, make sure you are checking out a book for
yourself too. A website of reading lists for all ages and
book suggestions for parents is at http://www.readingrockets.org/books/.
If I could leave one legacy to the children of the Southeast
Warren community, it would be the love of books and the well
ingrained habit of reading.
Mrs. Cooper, preschool teacher, extends an invitation to
all children who will be three or four years old by September
15, 2012, to a Preschool Play Date on May 23rd from 9:30 to
10:30 a.m. in the 4-year-old preschool room. Please tell your
friends and neighbors!
Congratulations to the following first and second grade students
who qualified to participate in our annual first and second
grade spelling bee last Friday: Kloie Miller, Jordan Harrington,
Emma Nady, Dominic Wadle, Cheyenne Wallace, Logan Montgomery,
Cameron Dittmer, Zoey Sherman, Josie Hartman, Liberty Mitchell,
Guinevere Mozak, and Abby Watt. Liberty Mitchell was our first
place winner, with Cameron Dittmer finishing second. Liberty’s
name will be submitted as the SEW Primary representative at
the 2012 Iowa State Fair Spelling Bee. Cameron will be our
alternate.
Yesterday the third graders toured the Intermediate building,
met the teachers, and learned about fourth grade. While they
were there, they had their spelling bee, competing against
the fourth graders. Third grade participants included: Randy
Jimenez, Tanner Dierking, Emily Thompson, Gabe Neer, Augustina
Gavin, and Chris Montgomery. Fourth grader Diamond Mosley
won that bee, and Ricky Harvey was the runner up. Congratulations
to all of them!
The end of the school year is drawing near. Please remember
to keep your family lunch account balance positive. From now
until the end of the school year, students will not be allowed
to charge meals unless there are funds in the account. Please
make sure that all library books are returned by the last
day of school.
The school board has appointed Dan Dow, who has served as
the Intermediate principal for the past four years, as the
preschool through 6th grade SEW principal for the 2012-2013
school year. I think you will find Dan very approachable and
pleasant to work with.
This is my last newsletter. I am retiring as principal
of the Primary building as of the end of this academic year.
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the staff, students,
and parents of the Southeast Warren community throughout the
past sixteen years and look forward to spending more time
with my family, reading, and tending the flowers in my yard.
Wave when you drive by the house. You’ll make my day!
My best wishes to all of you. Thanks for all of the
many kindnesses you have extended to me over the years!
