SOUTHEAST WARREN COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT
Special Board Meeting
August 20, 2008

The Southeast Warren Board of Education met in special session August 20, 2008, in the media center of the Junior/Senior High School building. Board President Paul Mead called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. The following board members were present: John Burrell, Larrie Williams, Jennifer Mihalovichh and Ron Miller. Superintendent Carl Reno and Board Secretary Julie Wilson were also in attendance.

AGENDA: Motion by Larrie Williams, seconded by Ron Miller to approve the agenda. Ayes: 5.

CLOSED SESSION: Motion by Larrie Williams, seconded by Ron Miller to hold a closed session as authorized by Section 21.5(1)(a) of the open meetings law to review or discuss records which are required or authorized to be kept confidential. Ayes: 5. The time was 6:31 p.m.

President Paul Mead called the closed session to an end at 7:55 p.m.

ACTION ON STUDENT MATTER: Motion by Larrie Williams, seconded by Ron Miller to amend the student record of the student involved in the hearing to improper classroom behavior for the incident that took place on November 8th. Ayes: 5.

2008-2009 DISTRICT GOALS: Mr. Reno recommended approving the 2008-2009 District Goals. Motion by Jennifer Mihalovichh, seconded by Ron Miller to approve the 2008-2009 District Goals. Ayes: 5. The 2008-2009 District Goals are as follows:

  1. Emphasis on quality teaching that will improve test scores
    A. Hire & retain quality staff
    B. Provide quality feedback & coaching
    C. Promote professionalism
  2. Develop strategy that will deter open enrollment out of the district and encourage students back to the district.
    A. Committee appointment
    B. Public relations forum - brochure
  3. Create a better classroom environment
    A. Review and update discipline procedure
    B. Team approach
    C. Higher expectations
    D. Safe classroom
  4. Provide ongoing communication
    A. District-wide – community involvement
    B. Between buildings
    C. Administrative
    D. With parents
  5. Continue to implement scientific research instructional strategies & use the data in curriculum decision making.
    A. Professional development
    B. Collaboration with AEA & Dept. of Education

ARTICULATION ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT: Mr. Reno recommended approving the Articulation Articles of Agreement for high school course series with Des Moines Area Community College. Motion by Ron Miller, seconded by Jennifer Mihalovichh to approve the Articulation Articles of Agreement with Des Moines Area Community College.

President Paul Mead adjourned the meeting at 8:14 p.m.
